## Where Are Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes Located?

Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes are located on the west coast of Tenerife. They are just a 40-to-50-minute drive from Tenerife South Airport, where most flights from mainland Spain, the UK, and the rest of Europe arrive. In fact, both towns have practically merged into one continuous coastal stretch with only a loose boundary between them. Los Gigantes sits further north, right next to the famous cliffs, while Puerto de Santiago extends just south of it.

## Why Visit Puerto de Santiago & Los Gigantes in Tenerife

### Why Visit Puerto de Santiago & Los Gigantes in Tenerife

The main reason to visit this area is the Los Gigantes cliffs, or Acantilados de Los Gigantes as they are called in Spanish. These cliffs were formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity that created a landscape found nowhere else in the world. You can get excellent views of them from Mirador Los Guios near the marina or from the main Los Gigantes Viewpoint. However, seeing these massive cliffs from the water is even better.

### Whale Watching

Whale watching in Tenerife is closely tied to the port of Los Gigantes, as most boat tours depart from here. In fact, the waters off the west coast of Tenerife are one of the few regions in the world where pilot whales can be spotted almost year-round. A resident population lives between Tenerife and La Gomera, just a few kilometers from the coast, so sightings of whales and dolphins are practically guaranteed.

### Relaxed Atmosphere

Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes offer a completely different vibe compared to the island's busier resorts. Here, you'll find far fewer high-rise hotels, no massive shopping centers, and no loud nightlife. Instead, there are fewer tourist crowds and plenty of cozy local cafes. The area is perfect for those who come to Tenerife specifically to unwind, rather than party late into the night.

### Great Weather Year-Round

When it comes to weather, the west coast is one of the best choices on the island. While the north often experiences rain, clouds, and higher humidity in winter, this region enjoys sunny weather almost year-round, with average winter temperatures around 20–22°C (68–72°F). Ultimately, if you want a warm beach holiday, your choice is between the quiet, family-friendly atmosphere of Los Gigantes and Puerto de Santiago, or the lively nightlife and five-star hotels of Costa Adeje and Las Americas.

## Puerto de Santiago vs. Los Gigantes

The centers of Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes are less than two kilometers apart, so you can easily walk between them in just 20 minutes. Both villages essentially form a single tourist area, but they have slightly different vibes.

Puerto de Santiago has a more local feel, with more permanent residents, making it convenient for daily needs since there are plenty of supermarkets, pharmacies, and banks nearby. Los Gigantes, on the other hand, has a distinct resort atmosphere. It features a scenic marina, which is the starting point for most boat excursions, and offers the best viewpoints of the cliffs. There isn't a huge difference between the two, so you can't go wrong with either option.

### Best Apartments and Holiday Rentals in Puerto de Santiago

For longer stays, apartments are often more affordable than hotels and offer more flexibility. This makes them a particularly convenient option for families and remote workers.

There are plenty of options, so you can choose based on your needs:

- Two-bedroom apartments close to the center of Puerto de Santiago and near local shops are ideal for families.
- For the best sea views, look for apartments with spacious terraces in the upper part of Los Gigantes overlooking the cliffs.
- If you're planning a long-term stay, the residential areas of Puerto de Santiago usually offer better monthly rental rates.

Finding reasonably priced accommodation here is fairly easy, as these areas aren't as overcrowded and commercialized as Las Américas or Costa Adeje.

## Best Restaurants in Los Gigantes & Puerto de Santiago

### Traditional Canarian Restaurants

Local restaurants in Puerto de Santiago offer traditional dishes like papas arrugadas with mojo sauce and rancho canario (a hearty Canarian soup) at much lower prices than the tourist hotspots in the south of the island. Among the places serving authentic Canarian cuisine, [KV Bar Gourmet](https://maps.app.goo.gl/Xi7Rrnp6E6gdTFbz6?ref=atlanticambience.com) stands out. This small bar near Playa de Los Guios overlooks the marina and boasts an impressive 4.8 rating on Google Maps.

### Best Seafood Restaurants With Ocean Views

Being right by the water makes trying local seafood a must. Fresh catches are served at most establishments along the waterfront, including [Fisherman's Inn](https://maps.app.goo.gl/psp7rkRasLXcPMpHA?ref=atlanticambience.com) in Puerto de Santiago. The restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and lovely views of the harbor and the island of La Gomera. Guests especially recommend the cod, tapas, and the local wrinkled potatoes (papas arrugadas). It currently holds a 4.0 rating on Google Maps.

### Best Sunset Dinner Spots Overlooking La Gomera

Several restaurants in Los Gigantes feature tables directly overlooking the ocean toward La Gomera. Among them, [Restaurant Aqua](https://maps.app.goo.gl/iTFpSQbNjKiK3miq7?ref=atlanticambience.com) at the Royal Sun Resort is a top choice. While it’s set back from the water, its elevated position offers stunning panoramic views. It has a solid Google Maps rating of 4.4.

### Casual Cafés and Breakfast Spots

For breakfast or an afternoon coffee, Puerto de Santiago offers plenty of small, local cafes with homemade pastries at very reasonable prices. [Bar Cafetería Alfonso](https://maps.app.goo.gl/cqewsjjPbDnqCUFX6?ref=atlanticambience.com), for example, is highly praised for its combination of simple, home-cooked food and sunset views from its terrace. It has earned a 4.7 rating on Google Maps with over 1,500 reviews.

Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes are located just a short walk from each other, making it easy to enjoy your vacation and see the best spots in both areas. However, choosing where to stay depends on your travel style.

### For Families

Puerto de Santiago is slightly more convenient for families with children, as it offers a wider selection of apartments with kitchens, along with plenty of supermarkets, pharmacies, and other daily amenities. Also, Playa de la Arena generally has calmer waters than the beach in Los Gigantes. However, Los Gigantes might be a better fit for families who prioritize stunning views and want to be right next to the marina for boat trips.

### For Couples

Couples visiting Tenerife usually choose Los Gigantes for its romantic atmosphere. It features a lovely promenade and restaurants with sunset views of La Gomera, giving the entire area a classic, lively resort feel.

### For Digital Nomads

If you're planning a long-term stay in Tenerife, Puerto de Santiago is an excellent choice. The area offers lower rental prices, a larger local community, and great infrastructure, including shops and banks. High-speed internet is widely available, and the neighborhood is generally quieter.

### For First-Time Visitors

If it's your first time in Tenerife and you want spectacular scenery, Los Gigantes is a fantastic option. The cliffs, marina, and main activities are all within walking distance, making the town compact and easy to navigate. Plus, you can still easily walk over to Puerto de Santiago whenever you want to explore.

## Practical Information

Planning your trip to Tenerife's west coast is easier than it seems, but we've compiled a list of key points you should know before arriving:

- **Parking:** Puerto de Santiago offers free street parking. However, if you want to park closer to the main attractions, you can use the paid parking lot at the [Los Gigantes marina](https://maps.app.goo.gl/LiYvkgqPinbsXcVZ7?ref=atlanticambience.com).
- **Public Transportation:** TITSA buses run regularly, connecting the area with the rest of the coast. Bus 477 goes directly to Costa Adeje, while bus 473 follows the same route but is slower, as it stops at almost all the resorts along the southwest.
- **Accessibility:** The central streets of both towns and the Los Gigantes promenade are generally wheelchair-accessible, although the terrain can be steep in some places. Playa de la Arena also features a ramp leading right down to the water.
- **Best Time to Visit:** The weather is comfortable year-round, but the high season typically runs from December to February and July to August, meaning prices will be higher. The ideal time to visit is from April to May or October to November, when the weather is beautiful and the ocean is warm enough for swimming.
- **How Many Days to Stay:** You can see all the beaches and viewpoints and even go for a boat trip in just two days. However, staying for 4–5 days allows you to truly relax and enjoy views that never get old.

This area makes a great base for taking day trips to other parts of Tenerife. While local buses run frequently, renting a car will give you much more freedom to explore.

## Nearby Places Worth Visiting

There are plenty of interesting places near Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes, ranging from short walks to a 10-to-60-minute drive by car or bus.

### Masca

The mountain village of [Masca](https://maps.app.goo.gl/8girEsekcQGF8c6B8?ref=atlanticambience.com) is only about a 20-minute drive away and is widely considered one of the most picturesque spots in all of Tenerife. Here, you'll find the famous Barranco de Masca trail, which leads through a deep gorge with volcanic rock formations all the way down to a hidden cove beneath the Los Gigantes cliffs.

[Alcalá](https://maps.app.goo.gl/G8j4BshheRkKvtpr9?ref=atlanticambience.com) is a small fishing village located just a 10-minute drive south of Puerto de Santiago. It is largely off the beaten track, which is exactly what makes it so charming. The village features several great seafood restaurants serving the fresh catch of the day, a quiet promenade, and a wild black-sand beach without any sun loungers. It’s the perfect place to see what the west coast looks like outside the main resort areas.

### Punta de Teno

[Punta de Teno](https://maps.app.goo.gl/jA7NSuzpxYE9D5A38?ref=atlanticambience.com) is the westernmost point of Tenerife, located about a half-hour drive from Los Gigantes through the scenic Teno mountain range. The area is known for its calm waters and excellent visibility, making it ideal for snorkeling and diving. Keep in mind that the road to the cape is closed to private vehicles daily between 10:00 and 19:00 (winter hours) or between 8:00 and 20:00 (summer hours).

### Teide National Park

A trip to Tenerife isn't complete without a visit to [Mount Teide National Park](https://maps.app.goo.gl/VYi46Zke53c8Jmiy6?ref=atlanticambience.com). It's about an hour's drive from this region. However, you can't get there directly by bus from Puerto de Santiago; you would need to change buses, and the journey can take several hours each way. While entry to the park is free, the cable car ride near the summit requires a ticket, which must be booked well in advance.

## Final Thoughts

Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes aren't the most crowded destinations in Tenerife, which is why you can still find a peaceful atmosphere here that's rarely found in the busy south of the island. Many locals live here, the pace of life is relaxed, and there are no long lines at the viewpoints. The cliffs of Los Gigantes are worth the trip on their own, and the surrounding area offers plenty of activities, whether you're staying for two days or a whole week. If you're planning your first visit to Tenerife and want to combine beach days, stunning nature, and exciting outdoor activities, this corner of the west coast is a must-see.
