Tenerife's main feature is its contrasts, which you can see everywhere you look. This is what makes the destination so versatile and suitable for all types of travelers. The south is always sunny, with perfect swimming weather for over 300 days a year.

In the north, you can experience the island's authentic culture, as this is where most locals live. The island is also home to Teide National Park, Anaga Rural Park, and Siam Park (frequently voted the world’s best water park).

Tenerife truly has something for everyone:

- Families with children will appreciate the excellent facilities, warm ocean water, and various water and eco-parks.
- Active travelers can enjoy hiking, surfing, whale watching, or a road trip along scenic, winding roads.
- Those who just want to relax will love the beaches, Michelin-starred restaurants, and luxury spas.

Solo backpackers and families alike will love this island.

## Where is Tenerife and How to Get There

Tenerife is part of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. It’s roughly a 5–6-hour flight from most European cities.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/82/55/82551af0-ef76-4586-a327-6e96ba348b88/content/images/2026/10/image3-7.jpg)

There are two airports on the island:

- [**TFS (South Airport)**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/weGdvy3j8Rv9fQGKA?ref=atlanticambience.com) is the main international hub, handling the majority of charter and low-cost flights.
- [**TFN (North Airport)**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/m8NXSJjZRfdMtJs26?ref=atlanticambience.com) is located near Santa Cruz; this airport is used primarily for domestic flights between the islands and mainland Spain.

You can also easily combine your trip to Tenerife with a visit to neighboring islands. Ferries run to Gran Canaria (1h 20 min, €32–€49), La Gomera (50 min, €42–€47), and La Palma (2h 30 min, from €50). You can check the official Naviera Armas and Fred. Olsen Express websites for current prices and schedules.

****La Gomera Day Trip from Tenerife.** Return ferry tickets and transport on La Gomera are included. Visit Roque de Agando and Garajonay National Park's ancient laurel forest in one day.

## Best Time to Visit Tenerife

Tenerife is a year-round destination, and there is always plenty to do. However, the best time to visit depends on what you are looking for.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/82/55/82551af0-ef76-4586-a327-6e96ba348b88/content/images/2026/10/image2-5.jpg)

Spring & Winter & Summer

### Winter

In the south, daytime temperatures rarely drop below 20–23°C. The water also stays warm (around 20°C), making it quite comfortable for swimming. Aside from the peak season between mid-December and mid-January (the New Year holidays), winter is generally less crowded and more affordable. It’s the perfect time to escape the winter cold, go hiking, or even take a dip in the ocean.

### Spring & Autumn

The shoulder season is ideal for most travelers. Temperatures are warmer than in winter, usually ranging from 23°C–27°C. This is the best time for hiking in Tenerife, as you can enjoy the Anaga and Teide trails without the intense summer heat.

****Anaga Mountains & Enchanted Forest Hiking Tour.** Hike through Anaga's laurel forest with a guide. Pick-up from accommodation in the south and east of the island is included.

[Check Availability ](https://www.getyourguide.com/en-gb/tenerife-l350/tenerife-anaga-hiking-tour-enchanted-forest-with-pick-up-t560436/?partner%5Fid=TAHYAUU&utm%5Fmedium=online%5Fpublisher&cmp=tenerifeguide-cta-anagahike&ref=atlanticambience.com)

### Summer

Summers in the south can be hot, with temperatures sometimes reaching 33–35°C. The popular beaches get quite crowded, but there is still plenty of space for everyone. The northern side of an island remains cooler because the hot winds from the Sahara rarely reach that part.

## North vs South Tenerife: Where to Stay?

To start with, the climate in the north and south is vastly different year-round. The south is almost always dry and sunny, while the north is humid, lush, and often cloudy. This is why most of the island's resorts are concentrated in the south.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/82/55/82551af0-ef76-4586-a327-6e96ba348b88/content/images/2026/10/image25-4.jpg)

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/82/55/82551af0-ef76-4586-a327-6e96ba348b88/content/images/2026/10/image35-2.jpg)

### Green & Authentic Northern Vibe

As mentioned, the north is where many locals live, so restaurant prices are generally much lower. The landscapes here are also a world away from those in the south.

Main locations in the north:

- [**Puerto de la Cruz**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/NwtpK3WPCtaRq1Mq8?ref=atlanticambience.com)is the main tourist hub in the north, yet still much less crowded than the southern resorts. There is plenty to see, including the famous Lago Martiánez pools, a botanical garden, a scenic promenade, and dozens of viewpoints scattered throughout the town.
- [**San Cristóbal de La Laguna**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/SczvV8uryBpM4vvCA?ref=atlanticambience.com) is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the island's former capital. Here, you can admire Canarian architecture dating back to the city's founding in 1496

These two spots perfectly capture the essence of northern Tenerife. However, the list of places to see is endless. The architecture, authenticity, greenery, and unique photo opportunities are what draw travelers to this part of the island.

### Comfortable and Always Sunny South

Have you seen some photos of the island with golden sand beaches, lively bars, and luxury hotels? You already have a good idea of what southern Tenerife is like.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/82/55/82551af0-ef76-4586-a327-6e96ba348b88/content/images/2026/10/image18-4.jpg)

We recommend considering two main areas for your stay:

- [**Costa Adeje**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/mGjK5A65X5DAui3y9?ref=atlanticambience.com) is a premium resort featuring luxury hotels, one of the island's most beautiful beaches (Playa del Duque), and excellent restaurants. It’s also a great base for whale watching and other water activities.
- [**Los Cristianos**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/arht9WWznGpqdKqn6?ref=atlanticambience.com) is a fantastic alternative that is often more affordable. From here, you can take dolphin and whale watching tours or even hop on a ferry to La Gomera from the nearby terminal.

****Not sure which to choose?**

The south is the place to be for those preferring a classic beach holiday. Those who value authenticity, hiking, and wild black-sand beaches usually prefer the north.

📌**You can find a full** [**comparison of the north and south Tenerife**](https://atlanticambience.com/canary-islands/tenerife-north-or-south-weather-beaches-vibe-compared.php) **based on key criteria in a separate article on our website.**

## Best Places to Visit in Tenerife (Beyond the Beach)

Tenerife offers dozens, if not hundreds, of unique sights, including black-sand beaches, architectural landmarks, mountains, and even volcanic deserts.

We’ve compiled a list of the top 5 must-see spots that are rarely found in standard guidebooks:

- [**Teide National Park**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/AGYjKbYXJQE3ZrYv6?ref=atlanticambience.com) is the island's number one attraction. The park covers a vast area of 19,000 hectares surrounding Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak. You can reach the cable car's upper station at 3,555 meters in just 8 minutes. A sunrise above the clouds is one of the island's most iconic views.
- [**Los Gigantes Cliffs**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/Q7Hx7BSwveqBjseQ7?ref=atlanticambience.com) rise to 600 meters high, plunging vertically into the ocean. The town has several miradors offering spectacular views, and you can also see the cliffs from the water on a boat tour. This area is also considered one of the best spots for dolphin and whale watching.
- [**Garachico**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/nyxqvAVQCPCtvWHv9?ref=atlanticambience.com) is a charming town in the north with a unique history. During a volcanic eruption over 300 years ago, much of the town was virtually wiped out and later rebuilt using lava rock. The natural ocean pools of El Caletón are a must-visit when you're in town.
- [**La Laguna**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/SczvV8uryBpM4vvCA?ref=atlanticambience.com) is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This town is full of surprises and beautiful colonial architecture. It’s well worth stopping here for at least a few hours to stroll through the historic center.
- [**Anaga Rural Park**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/jVZMMDp2fjFkurjp6?ref=atlanticambience.com) is a protected area covered in ancient laurel forests. It offers some of the best hiking routes in Tenerife, along with numerous picturesque miradores.

****Los Gigantes Whale Watching Cruise by Sail Boat.** Sail from the marina in a small group, look for dolphins and pilot whales, and see the cliffs from the sea. Swim stop and drinks included.

## Best Beaches in Tenerife for Every Type of Traveller

Tenerife has more than 70 beaches, ranging from developed resort areas to remote spots with volcanic sand that can be difficult to reach. It’s up to you to decide which one to choose, and we’ll show you the best options.

Playa del Duque & Playa de Benijo

The best beaches across Tenerife:

- [**Playa del Duque**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/ydy35qWVZPtJ6Air9?ref=atlanticambience.com) (Costa Adeje) is a famous beach that sets the standard for a comfortable vacation. It features light sand imported from the Sahara Desert, sun loungers, and crystal-clear water. Some of the island's top luxury hotels and excellent restaurants are located nearby.
- [**Playa de Benijo**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/eBjQSahKV3CR459v8?ref=atlanticambience.com) is the complete opposite of the previous beach. This wild spot in the north offers a unique experience for those willing to make the trip. There is a viewpoint here with a panoramic view of the rugged Roques de Anaga cliffs, the ocean, and the black volcanic sand below.
- [**El Médano**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZPFTcDowXqPDmNhR7?ref=atlanticambience.com) is a true haven for windsurfers and kitesurfers. If you’re looking for active tourism in Tenerife, this is your top choice. However, keep in mind that the wind can make it difficult to simply lie down with a book and bask in the sun.
- [**Las Teresitas**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/TvvWgTYsr5Bs6jT86?ref=atlanticambience.com) is a favorite location among locals. It’s rare to find such a large beach with golden sand so close to the capital, Santa Cruz. Like Playa del Duque, the sand here was imported from the Sahara in the early 1970s. The beach has all the necessary amenities for a comfortable day out.

What to do in Tenerife:

- [**Teide National Park**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/AGYjKbYXJQE3ZrYv6?ref=atlanticambience.com) offers a wide variety of experiences. You can take a cable car up the volcano, join a group night hike, or explore the unique landscapes of Roques de García. It is also a prime spot for stargazing; with virtually no light pollution, there are numerous night tours led by astrophysicists using professional telescopes.
- [**Hiking in Anaga**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/3LuKyg9Y5tFhMmndA?ref=atlanticambience.com) features unique routes through ancient forests for all fitness levels. These range from easy walks to multi-hour treks along mountain ridges with stunning views of both coasts.
- Whale watching tours primarily depart from[**Los Cristianos**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/MEhmWB2JL6W7Z9at7?ref=atlanticambience.com) and [**Costa Adeje**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/gvGd56Tf21CaT3em9?ref=atlanticambience.com). The chances of spotting sperm whales and dolphins are excellent, and pilot whales can be seen here year-round.

- A road trip around the island is best started on the TF-21 highway through Teide, continuing through the winding roads of Anaga and along the northern coast to Garachico. This is one of the best driving routes in the Canary Islands, allowing you to experience three different climate zones in just one day.

Your choice of accommodation depends on your budget and what you’re looking for in a trip:

- The top choice for luxury is [**Costa Adeje**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/mGjK5A65X5DAui3y9?ref=atlanticambience.com), where most of the island's 5-star hotels are located. Prices typically start at €300 per night.
- Boutique options, such as small design hotels and casas rurales (rural guesthouses), are best found in the north. Often set in historic buildings with original architecture, they offer a completely different atmosphere for your stay.
- For a budget-friendly vacation, [**Los Cristianos**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/SQkxzAymvSgyz1sK6?ref=atlanticambience.com) and [**Los Gigantes**](https://maps.app.goo.gl/PmvRcD1osKnhe8bW6?ref=atlanticambience.com)are excellent bases. ## Getting Around Tenerife: Car, Bus or Both?

Renting a car is the ideal option for those who want to truly explore the island. While you can have an unforgettable vacation staying in just one area, a car gives you the flexibility to completely transform your trip. TITSA public transport also covers major sights, cities, and many villages. With the Tenerife Bus app, you can check routes and schedules.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/82/55/82551af0-ef76-4586-a327-6e96ba348b88/content/images/2026/10/image14-6.jpg)

When planning your travel time, be sure to account for winding mountain roads, as distances on the map can be deceiving. For example, the drive from Costa Adeje in the south to Puerto de la Cruz in the north is only 72 km, but it can take up to two hours due to the terrain.

## Tenerife Local Cuisine

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/82/55/82551af0-ef76-4586-a327-6e96ba348b88/content/images/2026/10/image34-2.jpg)

**Papas arrugadas con mojo** is the island's signature dish, served everywhere from traditional guachinches to Michelin-starred restaurants. These are small potatoes boiled in very salty water until the skins are wrinkled, served with a spicy tomato sauce called mojo rojo or a coriander-based mojo verde.

Guachinches are seasonal, rustic eateries found at wineries, mostly in the north of the island. They usually open after the harvest and stay open for just a few months. They typically feature a simple menu, house wine, and an authentic local atmosphere.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/82/55/82551af0-ef76-4586-a327-6e96ba348b88/content/images/2026/10/image6-7.jpg)

Fish and seafood are incredibly fresh across the island. You should definitely try Vieja (parrotfish) or cherne (grouper). Of course, gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp) are also a must-try. Tenerife's wines are also steeped in history. The volcanic soil creates a unique mineral flavor that sets them apart. In a local guachinche, a liter of house wine usually costs around €3–4.

****Tacoronte Guided Winery Tour with Wine and Cheese Tastings.** Taste Canarian wines paired with regional cheeses at a local winery in Tacoronte, in the north of the island.

- **Do you need a car?** If you’re only staying in the southern resorts, you can easily get by without one. You can take the bus to the main sights, but having a car will significantly speed up your exploration of the island and give you more freedom.
- **What about the sun?** You can get sunburned in Tenerife even on a cloudy day. Always wear sunscreen (SPF) if you plan to be outdoors, especially when hiking in the mountains or visiting Mount Teide.
- **When can I swim?** In the south, you can swim in the ocean year-round, and the water is usually calm thanks to breakwaters. In the north, there are stronger currents and waves, especially on secluded beaches, so always check the safety flags before getting in.
- **What's the parking situation?** In most areas, you’ll find free or paid parking without much hassle. However, you might have to park a bit further away from your destination during peak tourist seasons.
- **Should I tip?** Tipping is appreciated, just like in mainland Spain, but it is not mandatory. A tip of 5–10% at restaurants is a nice gesture for good service.
- **Will there be any communication issues?** Spanish is the official language, but in tourist areas, English is widely spoken. In the north or in smaller villages, a basic knowledge of Spanish will definitely come in handy.

The most important thing to book in advance is your accommodation. Also, if you want to reach the very summit of Mount Teide, you’ll need a special permit, which must be reserved months in advance.
