Where is Garachico?

Garachico is located approximately 60 km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and about 40 km from the famous resort of Costa Adeje. You can get there by car in 1 - 1.5 hours.

Climate and Weather

The average daytime temperature in summer is between +24 and 27°C, and in winter is around +18–20°C. It makes Garachico the perfect destination all year round. The water temperature remains at 18-19°C in winter, but it is unlikely that you will be able to swim comfortably because of the big waves. Don't forget to bring comfortable shoes, a swimsuit (for natural pools) and sunscreen!

How do you imagine the most stunning and authentic city in the whole world? Garachico on Tenerife can lay claim to this title. The city is located on the northwest coast of Tenerife and is home to only a few thousand people. The entire Garachico Municipality in Tenerife consists of seven villages and accommodates ten thousand people in total.

It is hard to imagine that just a few centuries ago, it was one of the most important trading ports. Everything changed in 1706 when the eruption of the Trevejo volcano destroyed most of the city, including the harbor. The main thing is that all the residents survived because the lava was viscous and flowed slowly. Afterward, they were able to restore the Garachico and turn it into a picturesque place, where lava became one of the main building materials.

Let's explore a one-day trip route that will take you to the most fascinating and secret places in the city. Read to the end to find the secret Mirador location that only locals know about.

1. Ermita de San Roque

Our Garachico holidays begin with the Ermita de San Roque which is located at the city entrance.

You can park your car nearby.

Although the chapel is not large, it's a great example of typical Canarian architecture featuring simple lines, white walls, wooden details, and volcanic stones. This place is especially beautiful in the morning or at sunset. There is a small area with benches and views of the ocean and Garachico in front of the chapel, so don't forget to take some photos here.

This modest chapel has a special meaning for locals. It was built in the 17th century and dedicated to San Roch. Now, every year on August 16, Romería de San Roque begins from this location. Hundreds of locals dressed in traditional costumes walk through the streets of Garachico, accompanying the statue of the saint to the church of Santa Ana.

2. Puerto de Garachico

Puerto de Garachico is a modern port located at the foot of the historic center of the city. The port not only functions for its intended purpose but has also become a favorite place for walks, photo shoots, and drone launches.

What's interesting here:

  • The modern harbor was built in 2012. It replaced the old port, destroyed by lava during the volcanic eruption in 1706.
  • Today, yachts, fishing boats, and tourist boats are moored here.
  • You can walk along the pier and watch the waves, sunsets, and the power of the ocean.
  • The port is protected from the surf by concrete breakwaters.

You can enjoy panoramic views of the old town with its white houses and tiled roofs and the Garachico natural pools of El Caletón.

3. Plaza de Santo Domingo

Plaza de Santo Domingo is one of the most peaceful and cozy places in Garachico. It is hidden slightly away from the tourist routes, so it is almost always quiet and uncrowded.

The square is surrounded by beautiful historical buildings. The most notable among them is the former Dominican monastery, Convento de Santo Domingo, built in the 16th century. Now, it houses a cultural center where exhibitions and events are held. The building is well-preserved and the square itself has neat flower beds, benches, and several shady trees. You can sit here, look at the facades of the houses, listen to the wind rustling in the treetops, or have a coffee.

The walk along the TF-42 road leading to the center of Garachico is one of the most picturesque parts of our route. Here, the sidewalk runs right along the edge of the embankment, and the endless Atlantic Ocean opens up before you.

One of the main visual landmarks here is Roque de Garachico - a dark volcanic islet that rises in the sea just a few hundred meters from the shore. It appeared as a result of one of the ancient eruptions and has since become the unofficial symbol of the city.

4. Piscinas Naturales "El Caletón"

The next stop on our route is the famous Piscinas naturales de Garachico. El Caletón is one of the most recognizable places in the city. These pools were also formed after a volcanic eruption, when lava flows reached the ocean and solidified, forming amazing natural shapes right on the shore.

The water here is crystal clear, and the pools themselves vary in depth and size. Some are ideal for children and others are for those who like to dive deeper. When the sea is calm, you can swim here for hours. And on days with strong waves, you can just sit on the edge and admire the water thundering over the rocks.

5. Store Casa de Los Balcones (Centro Artesanal El Limonero)

Store Casa de Los Balcones is not just a tourist shop; it's a small museum. Here, old wooden balconies and a courtyard with flowers create the feeling that you have entered the past.

You can buy magnets, hats, postcards, and miniature volcanoes here, but all this is presented with such charm that you want to look at every little thing. You can also find products of local craftsmen: ceramics, embroidery, wicker baskets, and even delicacies, such as local honey and sauces.

6. Castillo de San Miguel

Right on the way to the center of Garachico, we are met by Castillo de San Miguel - a small but strong fort, standing almost at the water's edge. It was built in the 16th century to protect the city from pirates and other sea threats.

The fortress is made of volcanic stone as if it grew straight out of the rock. It has massive walls, a simple rectangular shape, and a tower on one of the corners. Despite its modest size, the building looks solid and impressive.

Today, there is a small museum inside where you can learn about the maritime history of Garachico and explore old maps, cannons, and ship models. Even if the museum is closed, it is worth walking around the fortress from the outside. There is an excellent view of the ocean and the lava formations that surround El Caletón.

7. Plaza de los Amantes

Leaving the fortress behind, we head to one of the most romantic corners of Garachico - Plaza de los Amantes, or Lovers' Square. This is a tiny, almost unnoticeable space, hidden among the ancient streets. It easily escapes the attention of a casual tourist, but once you turn here, you will find yourself in a real oasis of silence. The square has only a couple of benches, a few trees, some shade and ancient stonework all around.

The name “Plaza de los Amantes” is not accidental. The vibe here really sets you up for peace and intimacy. Even if you are walking alone, this place is surprisingly conducive to reflection and inner peace.

8. Punta del Muelle and Tensei Tenmoku

Next, we come to Punta del Muelle, a stone cape in the very center of Garachico, between the natural pools of El Caletón and the new port. It serves as a kind of border between the historic city and the ocean. Here, you can see the remains of the old harbor, Roque de Garachico, breakwaters, and the sea surface.

Right on Punta del Muelle, there is a modern sculpture "Tensei Tenmoku", the work of Japanese sculptor Kan Yasuda. This is a large abstract form made of white marble with a distinctive hole in the center.

9. Playa de Garachico

From Punta del Muelle, we head a little further east, and in a few minutes, we come to Playa de Garachico - a small but cozy city beach located at the foot of a cliff next to the TF-42 highway.

This beach is different from typical Canarian resort beaches. There is volcanic dark sand and pebbles, strong waves, and a decent depth. It is perfect for those who like to swim in the open sea. However, it is worth considering that swimming can be dangerous during storms - pay attention to safety flags.

10. Plaza Ramón Arocha and Parroquia de Santa Ana

We turn away from the beach back to the city and ascend towards Plaza Ramón Arocha. It is a small but cozy square surrounded by traditional houses with balconies made of dark Canarian wood. It is rarely crowded, so you can calmly examine the details of the local architecture and feel the atmosphere of a real island town.

From here, we continue our way to perhaps the most recognizable Garachico Tenerife attractions - Parroquia de Santa Ana, or the Church of Santa Ana. The temple rises above the central part of the city, and its snow-white façade and high bell tower are visible from afar, especially from the coastal part.

The church was originally built in the 16th century, but, like many things in Garachico, it was severely damaged by the volcanic eruption and then restored.

This is where locals bring the statue of Saint Roch during Romería de San Roque we've talked about at the beginning of the route.

11. Parque de la Puerta de Tierra

Parque de la Puerta de Tierra in Garachico is a small green oasis with a rich history. Here, dragon trees, Canary palms, and exotic shrubs brought by sailors from all over the world are planted.

The heart of the park is the ancient stone arch Puerta de Tierra, which survived the eruption. This gate was part of the fortifications that protected the port of Garachico in colonial times, when ships from the American continent arrived here. All people and goods entering or leaving Garachico had to pass through this gate. Today, the arch is a symbol of the city's resilience and its maritime past.

12. Plaza de la Libertad

We are approaching the heart of Garachico, the Plaza de la Libertad, where the main historical and cultural buildings are concentrated. It is the central square of the city and a real stage where the life of Garachico unfolds.

In the northern part of the square is the Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Garachico. It’s a small courtyard in front of the city hall. It is quieter, more secluded, and often holds exhibitions and official events. The Ayuntamiento building itself is a classic administrative building with elements of the Canarian style.

Nearby is the Convento de San Francisco, one of the oldest and most important monuments of Garachico. This Franciscan monastery was founded in 1524. After the volcanic eruption, it partially survived but was also restored. Now, it houses a local history museum, as well as a cultural center where exhibitions, lectures, and concerts are held.

13. Mirador de Peralza

It's time to get going. From the center we go up to Mirador de Peralza - a small observation deck above the city. The road there is very short but slightly uphill. Along the way are silence, rare houses, and the smell of dry grass. Then you'll see the whole city at a glance: tiled roofs, white walls, the bell tower of the Church of Santa Ana, volcanic pools, Roque de Garachico in the ocean, and then - only water to the horizon. We returned to where we left the car in the morning, and now let's visit secret places, which are away from the city but worth your time.

14 Bonus - Two Secret Locations

If you have some time and energy left, we highly recommend going outside of Garachico and looking at the city from above. These are not just beautiful views, it's an opportunity to see the entire route you have just taken, like on a map, in real life. And yes, it is worth it.

Mirador del Emigrante

Mirador del Emigrante is located right outside the city, on the way out towards Los Cillos. It is easy to stop: parking is right on the side of the road. There is a monument to emigrants there. It's a sculpture of a man with a suitcase looking into the ocean.

From this angle, the city looks like an old postcard: you can see volcanic pools, Roque de Garachico, the white bell tower of the church, and narrow streets stretching from the sea to the mountains.

Mirador de Atalaya

If you want something truly impressive — go to Mirador de Atalaya. The road there will take about 20 minutes and you will have to drive through a serpentine - narrow, steep, but quite passable. The main thing is to go carefully and without haste. Along the way, you will see vineyards, palm trees, and sometimes goats.

Then, you go to the top, and a panoramic view of the whole of Garachico and the northern coast of Tenerife opens up before you. This is not an exaggeration - the view is breathtaking. Especially closer to the evening, when the sun sets, and the city begins to be illuminated from below.

This route around Garachico easily takes a whole day - with stops for coffee and photos. The city, although compact, is very rich in locations. Garachico, Spain is not just a dot on the map of Tenerife. The city has survived a volcano, an ocean, destruction, and restoration, and remained alive and whole.

One day in Garachico is like living a small story with a beginning, a plot, twists, and an ending. Plan your day, take a camera, a drone, and comfortable shoes, and discover Garachico without rushing.
